"Listen Yaz, soon the government is going to tell us about a meteor coming for the earth but that would be a ploy to keep people out and in check. That's when it'll happen, the Martians! They will finally make their way into the earth and take control of everything". Yaz had just walked in on me reading a book from my favorite author, David Icke.
"All that nonsense you keep reading is messing with your head. How do you even know Aliens exist? Least of all the civilization you talk about? What you should be doing right now is preparing for your trip. Deon must be feeling so anxious to see you". My sister is nothing like me. She lives in the real world while I, on the other hand, live in the books on my shelf. "I am off to work now, I'll see you soon". She kissed me on the cheek and headed for the door.
At five o'clock in the evening, I thought I would just grab a snack and watch the cooked up stories they feed us on the news when I saw the breaking news;
"A meteoroid is set to pass through the earth's atmosphere. This might cause an explosive break-up, which may eventually cause the massive discharge of electromagnetic energy thereby throwing global connection off balance. The world has now reached a unanimous decision to sever all global communication. We may be looking at a long ten years of reconstruction after the impact." The lady on the news looked sad and terrified. She was only holding it together to pass the information. "Seven minutes is all we have before all communications are disconnected".
"Have you heard? Everyone is going mad out there trying to call their friends and family. It is now or ten years later. I've got to call mum and dad. They must be so confused right now" Yaz buzzed in disrupting my train of thought.
"Damn it! I knew it would come to this cock and bull meteor story. I'm telling you it's the Martians. They are here." I cursed beneath my breath. "I've got to call Deon," I said looking down at my bulging tummy.
Deon and I got married a year ago and I was supposed to join him in Austria where I would have my baby and eventually start a family together. Though he didn't know anything about my pregnancy, I wasn't sure why I kept it from him. Maybe because he had been a little skeptical having me come over but I wasn't sure what changed his mind as well. I felt tensed putting the call through.
"Deon! Have you seen the news? It's crazy and I think it is going to get even crazier. But I have something very important to tell you. I'm six months pregnant Deon. It's a girl...I think we should name her 'Noor'.
"you are pregnant?" Deon went silent on the phone. I could hear him breathe heavily.
"You know before all this is over, she is going to be almost ten years old. I can't believe you would miss this important event in our lives. I'll tell her everything about you and what a good man you are. Do you remember that journal you got me? I will write all our memories inside and save them just for you." A well of tears poured down my eyes.
"I have to tell you something" Deon finally spoke again. He was sobbing this time.
"You also think it's the Martians right?" Hearing me say that, my sister rolled her eyes at me.
"No Freya listen to me. I'm so sorry about what I am going to say to you right now. I did it for us, so we can have a better life. I've been hesitant about having you move down here because I am marr..." It suddenly went quiet from his end.
"Time up cupcake. I'm stuck with your crazy ass now". My sister muttered clutching a pillow tightly to her chest.
