What can make man lose all his acquired #wealth, #fame and #integrity in life is #discontentment, #selfishness and #covetousness. All those keywords are birds of a feather who flock together!
Greed, or avarice, is an inordinate or insatiable longing for material gain, be it #food, #money, #status, or #power.
As a secular psychological concept, greed is an inordinate desire to acquire or possess more than one needs. The degree of inordinance is related to the inability to control the reformulation of "wants" once desired "needs" are eliminated. Erich Fromm described greed as "a bottomless pit which exhausts the person in an endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction." It is typically used to criticize those who seek excessive material wealth, although it may apply to the need to feel more excessively moral , social, or otherwise better than someone else.
Back in 2008, there was a popular ponzi scheme in my town named New Freedom, others were Orion, Wealthgate, e.t.c., claiming to pay X2 of the money invested at the third month, sincerely I could remember that one of my friends’ mum went to obtain a loan of #1million in the bank and invested all the money on New freedom (ponzi scheme). Truthfully, she received the sum of #2million at the third month as promised and everyone was happy with the family, but something horrible happened at the end, and that’s where I’m going… Unknowingly, I just learned that the bank officials came to harass the woman and thereby gave her quick notice to vamoose the land, cos that’s what she used for her collateral in the bank, and I later realized that the woman reinvested all #2million (actual money and profit) in New Freedom and the scheme collapsed after 2 months, so she was unable to get her actual money back not to talk of her profit. This is called greed!
Another common and advanced ponzi scheme came to the limelight around 2016, and that was MMM and many others. People were not really in acceptance of the scheme when it came at first, but when they saw the trending testimonies from people, then they started embracing it. Some people started with low capital so as to test the authenticity of the system, and they earned as much as they could, I even have a friend who took the risk to invest #5million and it worked for him, some bought lands, cars and houses from their profits, but lo and behold; the system got crashed when the scheme decided to go for Christmas holiday. To my surprise, the system went for the holiday, came back and met many backlogs which were too much for them to clear, so the system had no option than to crash, though the top guardian and some guardians strategized many methods to pay up but all their plans never worked out. Do you know the number of people who was affected? In fact, I also fell into the victim! Funny enough, some people initiated the crash because of their own benefits, and that is selfishness.
The purpose for greed, and any actions associated with it, is possibly to deprive others of potential means (perhaps, of basic survival and comfort) or future opportunities accordingly, or to obstruct them therefrom, thus insidious and tyrannical or otherwise having a negative connotation. Alternately, the purpose could be defense or counteraction from such dangerous, potential negotiation in matters of questionable agreeability. A consequence of greedy activity may be an inability to sustain any of the costs or burdens associated with that which has been or is being accumulated, leading to a backfire or destruction, whether of self or more generally. So, the level of "inordinance" of greed pertains to the amount of vanity , malice or burden associated with it.
This great #cankerworm starts from the home, I remember when I was very young, my mother would always caution me to take meat that’s very closed to me, cos I would want to take the big meat no matter how far it was to me in the plate, but when I was growing up, I began to hold on to that instruction.
