I will always defend my home, this is a pledge I have taken years ago. It's not just my home in my country, its the larger home the Earth that I am talking about. This is the only home we have now, we may have dreams of going to the Mars and the moon, but before we make a mess of all those planets let's make our present house a home. If we cannot guard and take good care of what we have there is no guarantee that we will ever take good care of what we aspire to have.
Let me explain this to you, six years ago when I moved into the neighborhood I currently live in we had very few trees here. This meant that there were no birds and we had very little ground water. I was so unhappy on coming here. I quickly set up my terrace garden, people stopped by to chat with me. Many wanted to come up and see my garden. Every soul who came here was evangelized about the need to save our planet, to plant trees, and maybe just grow plants. I give away plants to all those who want them. I believe the best way to get people to do something is by taking the lead personally.
Soon we had a group of people who wanted to save our planet. Three years ago we bought a huge number of saplings, dug up the soil and planted trees. A neighbor and a good friend of mine took it upon herself to water the saplings everyday, thanks to her our trees have grown huge and there are birds all over the place. We have had to fight against the powers that be which keeps trying to cut down the trees we planted. Overnight we have had ten of our trees cut down for various reasons. We had to write nasty letters to ensure that the rest of our trees remained untouched. It is one long battle, but fight we will.
Nature is the source of our food, it is our life breath, it cools our earth and gives us peace. If we keep destroying nature she will fight back at us in various ways, tornadoes, cyclones, extreme temperature, earth quakes floods and all kinds of natural disasters. It is time we did something to save and guard our precious planet.
This Earth is our home, if we don't defend it who would? When we exercise our right and freedom we need to remember our responsibilities as well. Just planting trees is not enough. We need to do more to save our planet. there is so much we can do as individuals, remember every great movement started with one individual.
Reduce waste. For this I have totally brought down my purchases to the minimal limits, all waste is recycled and reused by me, what cannot be recycled or used which is pretty much negligible is sent to the waste dump. Right from newspaper to plastic bottles I recycle everything.
Conserve water. Please do not use a hose to wash your cars, use a bucket. Don't waste water it is a precious resource. I recycle rain water and use them for my plants. All water used for washing veggies fruits, meat and food is collected and used in the garden. I Use only as much water as needed for each plant I have set up a drip irrigation system with waster plastic bottles. So water usage is reduced.
Carpool as much as you can. Use bicycles to go shorter distances, convert to electric cars. I bought my husband and boys bicycles so they use these whenever they can. Basically, we need to reduce the pollution as much as we can. Don't wait for the government to do great things, they may never do much, take the initiative. We will soon be buying an electric car.
Fight against felling of trees or taking over of forest land. You don't have to do much, sign petitions that are raised against these acts on various platform, let your voice be heard. Join the fight peacefully by participating in various protest held locally for this cause. Remember, we share the planet with our four legged friends and our feathered friends. Let us give recognize their right to live. Let us learn to share what rightfully belongs to them without disturbing their habitat and bringing them to the verge of extinction. Let's be fair. Let's be their voice. Let's stop thieves who kill wild animals for monetary gains. Let's make a nose when needed. However, If you are a lawyer or part of the government you can do much more than this. Do your bit for our beautiful blue planet.
Reduce the use of energy. Our fridges and a/c emit poisonous gasses. Let's adopt practices that use renewable resources or if possible reduce the usage of these electronic items and reduce carbon emissions. Another thing we could do is to convert to solar or wind energy. I am planning to go 95% solar next year. I am currently working on my resources. Why not make use of what nature gives us freely?
Use less chemicals, let not our chemical waste destroy the oceans , rivers and the life in it. Let's treat our waste and reuse the water. Let us adopt sustainable practices in every industry possible. Let us not over use our resources and find that we have run out of them, this is a path toward destruction.
I believe each one of us can do little things to make our planet better. If we wait for better legislation and government to make our life better we can be waiting for ever. We are responsible too, let's take our responsibility seriously and fight for our planet. This fight is for our future, our future generations, so they may live in a better world. Let us not make life difficult for them. This could be our gift to the future, our children and our children's children. Let's not give leave them a planet that they cannot enjoy. So do your best today.
The fight goes on and each person who joins the army strengthens our hands and makes it easier for our voice to be heard. You don't need to be a Greta Thunberg, or an influencer with hidden agendas, just fight for what you love.
How can any sane human want to destroy this incredible beauty of nature we have been given as gift? This is our legacy lets fight to keep it beautiful and clean.
