Aviator sunglasses were a type of sunglasses design that were specifically designed for the military.
In the late 1930's and early 1940's the US government requested for sunglasses that would block off at least 50 percent of sun rays and these glasses were designed and distributed to pilots and sailors in the US Army and Navy specifically.
After the 2nd world war when everything military became fashionable the manufacturers decided to make the aviator design available to civilians.
Today this form of sunglasses design is still in vogue especially the design from Ray Ban.
